Hi, Hilary! What are you up to?

"I'm on tour in Canada and today I'm in the smallest town ever. It's freezing cold, there's nothing to do and I can't wait to leave because I'm bored! I recently got back from Australia, which was really cool, and I'm coming to the UK soon to promote my single, Fly."

So what's Fly about?

"It's one of my favourite songs from my new album, Most Wanted. It's about the people - especially young people - out there who feel they are always being judged and criticised."

Your boyfriend, Joel from Good Charlotte, worked on your album. How was that?

"I guess I was a little nervous cause we're also dating. I was scared of hitting a bad note because he's so talented. I was worried about doing something wrong but once I got over that it was okay."

Do you admire his talent as a musician?

"Oh yeah. I've seen him sit down and write an entire song in 10 minutes and the range of his voice is incredible. People think he is this guy who sings punk and rock but he's got a lot of soul in his voice - I love it."

With your busy schedule is it hard making time to see each other?

"Yes but I'm used to it and it keeps me independent. We've both accepted the fact that if we want to be in a relationship it'll have to be a long distance one. It started out that way, and it's how it has to be. But if I want to be with anyone, it's Joel. I don't need to be with anyone else."

Does it make spending time together really special?

"Yeah, we try to schedule our diaries so we can see each other as much as possible so we'll make sure we're both back in LA at the same time. Otherwise he might join me on tour or I go on the road with him. Either way, we make it work."

Apart from Joel, what do you miss most about being at home?

"My mum, my dad, my sister, my family, my friends, my house, my dog, my big wardrobe, my car and my favourite restaurants. And I miss LA. I really like LA!"

How do you manage to stay in touch with everyone?

"I Email and phone a lot. My sister Haylie and I are so close and we hang around with the same group of friends. Every Thursday, six of us have a girls night out at our favourite sushi restaurant - no boyfriends allowed! I hate it when I can't be there with them."

What do you get up to on tour?

"I'm close to all the people I tour with so we hang out at night. On the bus we watch a lot of DVD's. We're obsessed with 24 and Lost. I don't really know if I want to admit this but I also knit and crochet!"

What three things could you not leave home with out?

"I'm only allowed three thing? That's not fair - I'm such an over - packer! I'd take my computer because I can't get enough stuff on my iPod, some knitting needles and a good book to read."

What are you reading at the moment?

"I've just started Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. I stole it out Joel's house.
I asked him where he got it but he insisted he'd never seen it before. He said it must have been a present from someone!"

What made you want to read a book abou relationships?

"Because I'm in a relationship and we have problems just like anyone else. Joel and I don't always understand each other, but that's half the fun. It would be boring if everything was perfect. I think, after I've read the book, I'll make him read it!"
